Founded in 1842, the school moved to its present location in 1945 and is set within its own square mile of grazing and woodland. There are 550 girls (11-18), mostly boarders, among them 100 girls of UK and other families living abroad whose presence ensures a lively, cosmopolitan atmosphere. Conscious of its traditions as a former convent school, Woldingham accepts girls of all faiths whose families show sympathy with a Catholic foundation.
Consistently good GCSE and A Level results testify to the academic strength of a school dedicated to the education of the whole person in a Christian setting. Love of learning is instilled from the outset and virtually all leavers move confidently to degree courses. In addition to gaining tangible qualifications, students benefit through a coherent programme which encourages them to think for themselves, to handle freedom wisely and to develop awareness of the world community. The pressures of intensive studies are balanced and supported by an increasing focus on the pastoral care of each individual.
The school has invested heavily in computers and other IT equipment, much of it available for use at any time of day until late evening. Students rooms are all situated in a pleasing blend of old and new buildings. To ensure that facilities measure up to changing educational and social needs major purpose-built additions since 1988 have included a Science Block, Upper Sixth House and a Sports Centre. Soon a 600 seat auditorium and accommodation dedicated to the expressive arts will be completed. The extensive grounds provide good facilities for outdoor activities. There is a full-sized indoor heated swimming pool and all-year tennis courts. Day girls as well as boarders take advantage of a wide-ranging extra-curricular programme and first rate study resources during evenings and weekends. Sport, music, drama and the Duke of Edinburgh Award feature strongly.
As a member of an international network of schools Woldingham is ideally placed to develop European awareness in its students. Exchanges with sister Sacred Heart schools in France, Spain, Germany and Austria enable girls to undertake extended periods of study abroad. It is an aim that every girl will leaving Woldingham will acquire a good working knowledge of two other languages.
